Dental disease affects almost 85% of cats and dogs over one year of age. It is caused by the interaction of oral bacteria (plaque) and the animal's response to these bacteria and their toxins. Dental disease is the most common health concern for dogs. Your pet may show few obvious signs, and still suffer from one of the four stages of dental disease.

There are many ways to keep our pet’s teeth from developing dental disease. Here are a few ways:
- Brushing daily is the best option. Daily brushing is recommended as plaque forms in 6 hrs and quickly hardens to tartar on the teeth. Brush with a toothbrush with pet tooth paste or a Micromed Finger Cloth.
- Dental Diets that are fed as their regular meal (not just as treats). Royal Canin Dental Diet and Hill’s Prescription T/D (tooth diet) are designed to reduce the accumulation of dental plaque and tartar, while providing a complete and balanced diet.
- Appropriate chew toys and treats can also be beneficial to your pet’s teeth. Nothing hard.
- Finally water additives such as Oxyfresh or Healthy Mouth can be used. They help decrease bacteria that causes bad breath and strengthens collagen in the gums. They can also be put directly in the mouth.
A healthy mouth directly affects your pet's overall health, quality of life, behaviour and possibly even longevity. You can discuss your options at your next wellness exam or contact us to schedule a consultation.
